NOTE

Neurosurgery for Epilepsy?

Approximately one-third of people with epilepsy may require neurosurgery due to uncontrolled seizures despite medication. However, this group includes a subset of individuals who could benefit from surgical intervention. Effective surgical options exist primarily when seizures originate from a specific area of the brain; if they arise from multiple areas or the entire brain, alternative treatment strategies must be explored. Modern neurosurgery encompasses more than traditional surgical removal; now, stimulate-based therapies are employed to modulate brain activity and potentially reduce seizures. The ketogenic diet, initially associated with pediatric epilepsy treatment, may offer significant benefits for some individuals, although its exact mechanisms and universal applicability are still uncertain. Despite its limitations, the ketogenic diet has proven transformative for certain patients, reflecting the complex and individualized nature of epilepsy management.
