As we age, collagen and elastin in our skin decrease, leading to wrinkles and loss of elasticity. The epidermis, the visible outer layer of the skin, and the dermis, the layer below it, are connected by collagen. The decline in collagen content and elastin leads to saggy skin, and scientists estimate a 1% decline in collagen content per year.
