As exercise intensity increases, mortality rate decreases until a certain point, after which it starts to increase again, especially for individuals over 40 years old. Running a marathon once a year may not affect mortality, but running 40-50 miles per week at that age could. Resilience plays a role, as someone in their 20s doing the same activities doesn't seem to be impacted.
