Qualcomm founders knew they had a massive opportunity in the cell phone industry. They started by doing consulting work, including a project with Hughes on a satellite network. While working on this, they developed CDMA, a technique for multiple conversations on the same channels. CDMA became a key technology for Qualcomm.
