Atari's Decimation of the Home Video Game Industry
In the 1980s, the home video game industry saw a 97% drop in market size, causing third-party developers and big companies like Warner Brothers, Atari, and Mattel to suffer huge losses. This led to Atari being sold off and companies like Coleco and Mattel exiting the video game business altogether. The industry was so decimated that even the famous ET Atari game had excess cartridges that were buried in New Mexico.
