#47 Josh Rasmussen - Why is Consciousness a Philosophical Problem?

Within Reason

NOTE

The Fundamental Nature of Mind in the Existence of Conscious Beings

Conscious beings exist because minds are fundamental, as the absence of foundational mentality would mean that conscious beings could not exist. Some philosophers doubt the existence of conscious beings if mind is not fundamental, as they believe it cannot be explained in terms of physics. Therefore, there is motivation to believe that some kind of mind is fundamental. A gentler probabilistic version of the argument also supports this by stating that the probability of conscious beings is higher when consciousness is fundamental, as opposed to starting with mindless entities like fields.
