Optimal Protocols for Studying & Learning

NOTE

Test immediately after learning

Testing oneself soon after initial exposure to new material enhances retention and performance. A comparative analysis of three groups showed that individuals who were tested immediately post-study performed significantly better in subsequent assessments, even after a delay. In contrast, those subjected to a longer delay before any testing exhibited the poorest results, despite receiving immediate feedback after a later test. This suggests immediate self-assessment counteracts the brain's tendency to forget and supports effective learning strategies. Learning benefits from neuroplasticity, emphasizing the importance of timely testing in educational contexts to mitigate forgetfulness and optimize memory retention.
