NOTE

The Complexity of Reading Comprehension

When working with text and teaching students to work with text, it is important to consider the interaction between the text's features, the reader's background knowledge, and the reading purpose. Comprehension cannot be taught as a standalone skill, but the contributors to comprehension, particularly language comprehension, can be developed in students. Reading comprehension involves both the end product of understanding what is read and the processes or contributors to reaching that understanding, including language and cognitive processes such as word recognition, vocabulary access, sentence comprehension, integrating meanings, and incorporating background knowledge, with the ultimate goal being the mental construction of meaning and overall understanding.
