The Ethereum upgrade naming scheme has evolved over time. Initially, the proof of work chain had upgrades named after cities like frontier, homestead, metropolis, Istanbul, Byzantium, Constantinople, and Istanbul. Then, the naming scheme transitioned to devcon city names like Berlin, London, and Cancun. The merge upgrade was named Paris as a tribute to ETC. On the other hand, the consensus layer upgrades are named after stars in alphabetical order like all pair, Lattrix, Capella, and NAB. The execution and consensus layer upgrades happening simultaneously led to merging names like Cancun and the NAB into Dancun. This naming convention helps differentiate changes on the proof of stake side and the EVM side during upgrades.
