Fostering Intrinsic Motivation for Lifelong Learning
Transfer and generalization are biologically primary processes that individuals are evolved to perform naturally. Instead of direct instruction, it is crucial to expose individuals to environments where they can explore ideas independently. Explicit instruction can be limiting, and research indicates that achievement leads to motivation as much as motivation leads to achievement. Rather than solely focusing on achievement, the key should be to instill a passion for lifelong learning in students, especially considering the evolving nature of knowledge and the necessity for continuous learning beyond the age of 18.
