Founder CEOs are common in new industries as they can gain high returns on capital and own a significant portion of the company. However, as industries stabilize, it becomes difficult for new leaders to rise and have significant ownership stakes in established companies. Rising elites often merge with the existing elite, leading to a consolidation of power and influence. In the business world, this can manifest as a financial merger between a challenger and an incumbent, with the challenger usually seeking leadership position and the old establishment retaining purchasing power but losing control and status.
