Protecting Privacy Laws through Ballot Initiatives
The tech community initially resisted a privacy law, but after Cambridge Analytica scandal, the legislature passed CCPA unanimously, only to be later weakened by tech industry lobbyists. Alistair initiated a ballot initiative, Prop 24, in 2020 to prevent watering down of privacy laws. The CPRA made the law a floor instead of a ceiling, prohibiting its dilution. It established a privacy agency and aligned California's privacy law more closely with GDPR, demonstrating the potential of direct democracy to counter industry influence in states like California.
