In order to be an effective leader in an organization, it is important to understand the organization's leadership model. If a client is unsure of what it means to be an effective leader in their organization, they should seek clarification from the HR department. The leadership model is typically composed of 10 to 12 skills that can be developed. Some individuals may feel they have mastered these skills internally and want to be seen as a leader, but are not receiving the desired response from others. Advice for women in this situation is to continue pushing to be a leader and seek feedback to better understand why their efforts are not being recognized.
The shift from being part of a team to leading one isn’t like flipping a switch; it’s a process, and often an awkward one. Not only do you have to convince other people that you can and should lead, but sometimes you have to convince yourself. That’s not always easy for women, given that leadership has long been defined by how men act. Finding a style that’s authentic and resonates with others requires reflection and patience.
