The Tension Between Success and the Desire to Feel Like We're Enough
In our pursuit of success, we often sacrifice happiness, thinking that it will lead to a more fulfilling life. However, success doesn't guarantee happiness. We are statusful beings, needing external validation, but we may overcomplicate our lives and prioritize success excessively. Simon Sinek introduced the concept of finite and infinite games, where finite games have set players, rules, and a winning outcome, while infinite games have unknown players, no rules, and the goal is to keep the game going. Applying finite rules to infinite games leads to failure. Many worthwhile games are infinite, like staying in shape, maintaining a marriage, and sustaining a business. The point of success is to continue doing the things that make us successful. Winning means living as many perfect days as possible, and redefining success on our own terms frees us from the pressure of external outcomes. Ultimately, nothing we do will matter in the grand scheme of things, which relieves the weight of external expectations. The point of the game is simply to keep playing.
