NOTE

The Five Big Speeches of Jesus in the Book of Matthew

Matthew has organized five major speeches of Jesus strategically in his book, which are known as the five big speeches. The first is the Sermon on the Mount in chapters five through seven. The second is the missionary speech in chapter ten, where Jesus commissions the apostles. The third speech is in chapter thirteen, known as the Sermon on the Shore, where Jesus teaches kingdom parables. The fourth speech is in chapter eighteen, focusing on the upside-down value system of the kingdom of heaven. The fifth speech, set in Jerusalem, includes oracles of doom and predictions of the destruction of Jerusalem. Each of these speeches ends with the same phrase 'When Jesus finished saying these things,' creating pillars surrounded by narratives that explore the speech ideas, organizing the drama of Matthew.
