NOTE

Muscle Mass and Metabolism: A Complex Relationship

Muscle mass positively influences metabolic rate, leading to higher energy expenditure at rest compared to adipose tissue. However, while skeletal muscle has a metabolic rate that is slower than certain organs like the liver, heart, and gastrointestinal tract, its overall presence significantly contributes to metabolism. Despite this, studies reveal that individuals with obesity may have higher basal metabolic rates (BMR) on average than those without; there is no substantial BMR difference when comparing obese individuals to lean counterparts or type 2 diabetics to non-diabetics.
