Don't Play a Game You Know You Are Going to Lose
The level of asymmetry between our willpower and the predictive analytics of technology platforms is immense. Technology platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok have access to massive computing power and billions of data points, allowing them to accurately predict and provide the perfect content to keep us engaged. On the other hand, our prefrontal cortex, which evolved millions of years ago, is tasked with goal articulation, memory retention, self-discipline, and staying on task. It is no match for the computational power of AI. The analogy of playing chess against Gary Kasparov is used to illustrate this point. While we may think a few moves ahead, Kasparov can think millions of moves ahead. However, when Kasparov plays against the best supercomputer, the supercomputer can think billions of moves ahead and consistently beats him. The same applies to us when we engage with technology platforms. Despite our intentions to watch just one video or scroll for a few more minutes, the asymmetry in power means that these platforms know our weaknesses better than we know ourselves. It is important to recognize this asymmetry and exercise caution in our interactions with technology.
