NOTE

Understanding the Distribution of Cholesterol in the Body

Plasma cholesterol levels are often a concern, but they only represent a small fraction of total body cholesterol. Most cholesterol is found in cell membranes and steroidal producing tissue. Therefore, a reduction in plasma cholesterol does not indicate a significant reduction in total body cholesterol. The majority of cholesterol is found in peripheral cells or is circulating in the plasma. Cholesterol in the brain is separate and doesn't interact with other cells. Overall, understanding the distribution of cholesterol throughout the body is important for proper evaluation.
