The Link Between Physical Activity and Brain Health
Low levels of physical activity or inactivity are associated with poor brain health, smaller volumes of key brain structures, worse cognition, and greater risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease at a broad public health scale. Individually, being physically active is the best way to reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, brings nutrients to neurons, and upregulates neurotrophin, specifically brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which acts as a fertilizer for new neurons, helping their birth, survival, and integration into brain processes.
