NOTE

Literal vs. Metaphorical Language in Poetry

Poetry uses words metaphorically to create a surplus of meaning. The language and imagery shouldn't be confused with the reality being referred to. For example, when I say my wife is a fireball, it's a metaphor. She's too real and intense to be described literally. Poetry communicates more and adds weight to the words.
