The Complex Perceptions of Taiwanese Identity
Taiwan's complicated history with mainland China is explored through the perspective of Chen Yotong. Mainlanders saw Taiwan as a way to reclaim the mainland, but islanders hoped for unity and freedom. However, when the mainlanders arrived, they established a military dictatorship, making the islanders feel like second-class citizens once again. Chen experienced this oppression even as a child in school. He felt brainwashed by the nationalist education system and harbored a desire for a unified 'big China fantasy'. The influence of the KMT brought a focus on Chinese geography and infrastructure to the Taiwanese education system.
