The extended mind is a theory that the tools we use can actually become parts of our minds. Back in the nineties, andy clark and i argued that these tools could become part of the thinking process themselves. We didn't have smart phones yet in 19 95 when we wrote the paper. If someone takes away my my smart phone, i feel kind of helpless, as if i an i've been mentally disabled. And to me, that just rings true.
