OUR MORAL COMPASS: Understanding Guilt, Remorse, & Atonement

This Jungian Life Podcast

NOTE

The Role of Guilt in the Human Psyche

Guilt is considered part of the archetypal matrix of human beings. It is present in many myths, including the Judeo-Christian myth of Adam and Eve. Guilt arises when individuals disobey rules and feel ashamed. This initial act sets in motion the concept of original sin and redemption, which is central to the Western psyche. The story of Adam and Eve distinguishes between shame and guilt, with guilt arising from the awareness of breaking a rule. Guilt is connected to unconsciousness, and Carl Jung believed it to be an important aspect of individuation and psychological growth. He viewed guilt as essential for developing an awareness of ourselves and our impact on the world. According to Jung, life itself is guilt, as the recognition of the opposites within us is inescapable and necessary for all psychic life.
