JDR’s admiration for Napoleon

Rockefeller, in his old age, compared himself to Napoleon, highlighting the qualities that made Napoleon a great leader - his genius for organization, understanding of men, ability to inspire confidence, and skill in selecting and empowering capable individuals. Napoleon's virility, direct connection to the people, quick and original thinking, and appeal to imagination and sympathy were seen as advantages over European monarchs. Rockefeller believed that the abundance of ambitious rivals in modern times would prevent another Napoleon from emerging.
