Episode #303: Metabolic Adaptation

Metabolism: A Myth Busted
Obesity does not correlate with a slower metabolism; the energy burned per kilogram of body mass is similar between obese and lean individuals. Both high and low metabolic rates result in similar weight gain averages yearly. Metabolic adaptation occurs during weight loss, where changes in body mass affect resting energy expenditure. However, individual responses vary widely, with some experiencing disproportionate changes in energy expenditure during active weight loss. While metabolic adaptation is significant during weight loss efforts, its influence diminishes during weight maintenance. After weight loss, other factors—especially neural and hormonal feedback related to appetite and energy use—play a critical role, and for many, genetic factors contribute to challenges in weight loss, leading to heightened hunger and reduced satiety.
