NOTE

The Consequences of Naive Interventionism: Unnecessary Surgeries and Harm

In a study, 215 children were examined by doctors, and 99 were found to need surgery. Another group of doctors examined the remaining 116 children, and 52 were recommended for surgery. The risks of surgery were much worse in the past, resulting in morbidity and occasional deaths. This example highlights the concept of a break even point between medical gains and harm. Every unnecessary operation shortens a child's life expectancy. This story exposes the harm caused by naive interventionism and the importance of considering its costs. It demonstrates how the desire to intervene can sometimes do more harm than good.
