The impacts and opinions on resource extraction in indigenous communities
Indigenous people in the Northwest territories have been forced off the land due to colonization, leading to a shift from living off the land to becoming wage laborers. With limited job opportunities, they are drawn to resource extraction jobs, despite concerns about the environmental impacts. While all agree that taking care of the land is important, some oppose extraction due to the use of chemicals, while others prioritize the need for jobs and survival. The loss of traditional skills has further contributed to their reliance on extraction jobs.
