The Five Levels of Motivation

Fear, guilt, shame, anger, and rage can motivate people, but they leave a toxic residue. Extrinsic rewards, such as money and fame, also motivate but come with negative consequences. Intrinsic rewards, like living with a sense of purpose and using one's zone of genius, are a higher level of motivation that does not leave a toxic residue. The highest level of motivation is play, which all mammals are motivated by.
