Contrary to the traditional belief that stress is always harmful, recent studies show that stress can have positive or negative effects depending on various factors. High-ranking leaders with high demands and little sleep had lower stress levels due to their sense of control. Different variables like types of stress, duration, control, power, social support, coping mechanisms, and altruism dictate whether stress is beneficial, neutral, or harmful. The key is to find a job that balances demands with abilities, offering a fulfilling challenge in the 'stretch zone.' Instead of avoiding stress, seek out work that is supportive, meaningful, and challenging.
