Theory of Consciousness and Matter

The key insight is that intuition alone cannot guide our understanding of consciousness. A theory of consciousness is required to explain how conscious experiences arise from highly excitable matter like the brain or a computer. Traditional explanations such as the notion of a soul as the source of consciousness are no longer widely accepted. The distinction between the consciousness of humans and artificial intelligence lies in behavior and self-awareness. If an artificial intelligence can exhibit human-like behavior and claims consciousness, what basis do we have to deny its consciousness?
