The Possibility of Consciousness Without a Self

Our minds may receive a lot of information that isn't immediately available to our conscious selves. Intuition or instinct may allow us to access that information, and at that level of processing, the self may not exist. This could explain how something can appear conscious from the outside but not actually be conscious, like a zombie. We're selective in how we apply moral judgment to animals based on whether their actions seem cruel or sweet.
