Ketamine: Benefits and Risks for Depression, PTSD & Neuroplasticity

NOTE

The Monoamine Hypothesis of Depression

Monoamines like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine are neurotransmitters that modulate neural circuits in the brain and body. The monoamine hypothesis of depression suggests that deficiencies in these monoamines may lead to depression, although there is limited evidence supporting this claim. Drugs like Prozac, Zoloft, and Bupropion aim to increase certain monoamines to relieve depressive symptoms; however, they are effective in only about 40% of patients and often come with side effects like dry mouth, changes in appetite, libido, and sleep patterns. Ketamine is being explored as an alternative treatment for depression to mitigate such side effects and provide relief for all individuals suffering from depression.
