The North: Abolitionism, Racism, and Lincoln's Illinois
In the North, one can be an abolitionist and still be racist. Many Northerners grew up without slavery or black people, living in a mostly white society. Abraham Lincoln, for example, began his career in Illinois, where there were anti-black laws. While slavery was illegal, black people were also restricted. This raises the fascinating topic of colonization. We will discuss Lincoln further after the break.
