Evolution of Team Roles for Improved Performance
Starting with the approach used at Bell Labs, the team initially only had one job title - member of technical staff. This evolved to include scrum master and product owner roles. The transition to these three roles was found to be critical to performance, as evidenced by a case study at a large mortgage company. In this case, the implementation of scrum practices led to a reduction in team roles from 15 to 3, resulting in improved efficiency.
