NOTE

High Blood Sugar Harms with Duration and Spikes

Chronic hyperglycemia, or elevated blood sugar levels, is detrimental due to its association with the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to inflammation and oxidative stress. AGEs occur when sugar molecules bind to proteins, disrupting their normal function. Elevated ROS, generated by mitochondrial activity and other enzymes, exacerbates inflammation, particularly within blood vessels and immune cells during periods of hyperglycemia. Spikes in blood sugar are particularly harmful, not just due to their magnitude, but also their duration; prolonged high glucose levels can induce cumulative damage, especially in individuals with type 2 diabetes, where levels may remain elevated for hours without returning to normal. This ongoing cycle of spikes and prolonged hyperglycemia can result in significant health implications.
