Self sufficiency and power as mimesis
Gerard's concept of self-sufficiency goes beyond physical needs and includes social needs. He gives an example of a coquette who has power over suitors for social admiration and belonging. The goal of self-sufficiency is to have power over both physical and social worlds to fulfill all needs with a snap of fingers.
