The Importance of Stakes in Storytelling

Stakes are crucial in storytelling as they keep the audience engaged by making them wonder and worry about what will happen next. It is essential for storytellers to make the audience constantly curious and concerned about the outcomes. Stakes create the tension and suspense necessary to maintain the audience's interest. By starting a story with high stakes, like a big spaceship shooting at a small spaceship in Star Wars or a police officer chasing a man in an Alfred Hitchcock movie, the audience is immediately drawn into the narrative and invested in the outcome. Inserting stakes effectively is key to engaging the audience in any type of story, whether it is fiction or based on real life events.
