Materialism: Understanding the Brain's Role in Consciousness
Materialism is often misunderstood as the belief that the brain produces consciousness. However, Tim Arlasges argues that the brain can produce consciousness because the particles that make up the brain have special non-physical capacities. These capacities are dormant until the particles come together in complex ways. Therefore, it can be more accurate to say that physical states are not producing feelings and experiences, but rather physical states are feelings and experiences themselves.
