How Trump saved ”the failing New York Times”
The New York Times experienced a surge in popularity and became a better business than ever before, despite being berated by President Trump as failing. They saw significant growth in digital subscribers, with a 47% increase in 2016 and an addition of 300,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2017. By 2019, they reached 3.4 million digital subscribers and in 2020, they surpassed five million digital news subscribers. Digital revenue also exceeded print revenue for the first time, and the company became completely debt-free. The New York Times now has significantly more subscribers than other news organizations, with 7.5 million compared to The Washington Post's two million. In 2002, they only had 1.1 million print subscribers, making their digital subscription growth remarkable.
