The Appeal of Maoism
During the late 60s and early 70s, there was a tendency among left intellectuals to flirt with Maoism, despite the destructive and brutal elements associated with it. However, there were aspects of Maoism that saved 100 million people from death and starvation in China, compared to democratic capitalist India. This difference can be attributed to the lack of rural development and healthcare programs in India. Despite the lack of awareness regarding this fact, scholars such as Amartya Sen have discussed it. The appeal of Maoism for people on the left stemmed from their confused ideas about it. Interestingly, one of the most enthusiastic Maoists was Henry Kissinger, who adored and worshipped Mao.
