NOTE

Implications of Falling Birth Rates Worldwide

Countries need a birth rate of about 2.1 children per woman to maintain population levels. However, many countries, including the UK and the US, have rates as low as 1.6, leading to a decline in population. By 2050, around three quarters of countries will have birth rates below replacement level, and by 2100, this will be the case for 97% of countries. This trend will drive a need for high-income countries with low birth rates to compete for migrants from countries with higher birth rates, as populations continue to decline globally.
