NOTE

The Reputation and Influence of Karl Barth

Karl Barth had a vast public reputation and was known politically, but his influence on the churches was much less. This was partly due to his steadfast opposition to liberal theology, which hindered alignment with the liberal wing of the church, and his atypical understanding of key doctrinal issues, which created a disconnect with many conservative evangelicals. His dialectical way of thinking, where he believed that when dealing with God, two contrary ideas need to be held together in tension, contributed to the difficulty in understanding his theology and his limited influence on the churches.
