#251 Ben Franklin and George Washington: The Founding Partnership

Founders

NOTE

Franklin's First Memoir

Benjamin Franklin, at 50 and already established as an entrepreneur, scientist, and writer, focused on uniting the 13 colonies for a common cause after realizing the threat posed by reports from the western frontier. He proposed an intercolonial defensive confederation, which laid the foundation for the future union of the colonies. Franklin's appeal for unity was accompanied by the first American editorial cartoon, depicting a rattlesnake cut into pieces symbolizing the colonies and the caption 'join or die'. This idea, though initially a rough outline, eventually led to the founding of America.
