NOTE

The Importance of Social Connection and Purpose for Physical and Mental Health

Social connection is fundamental for human beings as we are a collectivist species that thrives on being part of a social group and having a purpose within it. Having meaning and purpose gives a signal to the body that it's worth being alive and has an impact on the immune system and physiology. The grandmother hypothesis suggests that being useful and healthy in later stages of life benefits the tribe and increases the likelihood of passing genes to future generations. However, when an individual is no longer of benefit to the group, it could trigger a decline. Social connection, belonging to a group, and having purpose are critical for survival, health, and cognitive function, as they signal that an individual has meaning and value.
