Backpropagation is highly accurate but the human brain may engage in continual learning using less accurate yet effective mechanisms. Instead of completely abandoning backpropagation, we could learn from the brain's ability to robustly maintain representations while learning and apply those principles to enhance backpropagation. For example, incorporating an active learning process or a mechanism for assimilating uncertain new information could be integrated with backpropagation to improve its effectiveness. The future may involve combining the strengths of backpropagation with the insights from how the brain maintains representations robustly while learning.
