Meeting Housing Demand in the United States

In the United States, the demand for housing units increases by about 1.1 million annually due to population growth, while approximately 400,000 housing units are demolished each year. This creates a total need of about 1.5 million new housing units annually. However, for the past 12 years, the country has been underbuilding, leading to a shortage of an estimated three to four million housing units. Presently, the country lacks the capacity to construct more than 1.5 million housing units per year due to shortages in labor, materials, and difficulties in obtaining land permits for development.
