Skin Biopsy Detection of Phosphorylated α-Synuclein
Neurology® Podcast
Differentiation of Synucleinopathies Based on Biopsy Patterns
Having one biopsy site positive confirms synucleinopathy, but the pattern across biopsies reveals more insights. For instance, MSA shows more synuclein in the skin compared to Parkinson's, aiding in differentiation. MSA presents with peripheral synuclein deposition in multiple biopsies, while Parkinson's is often limited to one site like the back of the neck. The study hints at distinctions in synuclein deposition related to the sequence of Parkinsonism symptoms and emphasizes the importance of multiple biopsies for comprehensive analysis. Additionally, dementia with Lewy body and pure autonomic failure show different synuclein patterns, with the latter having the most deposition among all disorders.
