FBL57: Bernardo Kastrup - The Nature of Reality & AI

The Singularity Discussion Series

NOTE

Perception as a desktop environment Metaphor

Perception is likened to a desktop environment metaphor where individuals are compared to pilots who navigate the world through instruments rather than transparent windows. Just as pilots rely on their dashboard for accurate information about the world outside the airplane, humans rely on perception as their dashboard to navigate reality. The mistake is thinking that the world is the dashboard, leading to immediate contradictions. Evolution would not favor individuals perceiving the world as it truly is since it wouldn't be conducive to survival. Just like how seeing computer files as they truly are would render them unusable, perceiving reality as it actually is would hinder our ability to interact with the world effectively. Therefore, perception serves as a desktop metaphor that presents a useful and actionable version of reality, allowing us to survive and thrive.
