Factors affecting magnesium levels
The common reasons for a loss of magnesium in the stool or urine include PPI use, history of malabsorption, small bowel surgery, diarrhea, and hyperglycemia leading to osmotic diuresis. Magnesium intake from green leafy vegetables, nuts, legumes, and chocolate can contribute to mild magnesium deficiency. However, excessive intake of chocolate or any food can lead to potential osmotic diuresis and magnesium loss.
