Sam Altman: from college student to YC President to CEO of OpenAI
The idea behind OpenAI emerged when deep neural networks started to work in 2012, showing that the more compute power used, the better the results. The ImageNet result, where a computer could identify images based on descriptions, was a significant milestone in the field. Sam Altman saw the potential of artificial general intelligence (AGI) during his year off, and for him, AGI represents a system that can learn, self-improve, reason, and create new information like a human. He believes that achieving AGI would be the most significant invention in human history, surpassing the computer revolution.
